Almond Leaf
Terminalia catappa
Almond leaf (Terminalia catappa) comes from a large tree reaching 25 metres, its branches growing in whorls so that the crown spreads like a parasol. The leaves are big and spoon-shaped, 20 to 30cm long and 10 to 13cm wide, smooth on top and with a light fawn down beneath. The tree is planted the length of Vietnam for shade, though it is thought not to be native here, having been brought in from the Moluccas. Leaves, bark and seed are all gathered; leaf and bark carry tannin, and the oily kernel inside the fruit is edible, its taste close to almond oil.
