Basil
Ocimum basilicum
Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is an annual herb of the mint family, smooth or slightly hairy, branching from the base to 50-60cm, with paired stalked leaves that are green in some strains and dull purple-black in others, and small white or purplish flowers set in whorls of five or six. Thought to have come originally from India and China, it is grown throughout Vietnam, and in the north was long raised simply for its leaves and shoots as a kitchen herb. Leaves and flowering tops are picked and dried; the whole plant yields a pale yellow, lightly scented oil, mostly methyl chavicol.
