Betel Leaf
Piper betle
Betel leaf (Piper betle) is a climbing vine with a smooth stem and alternate leaves on sheathing stalks, the blade ovate, 10 to 13cm long and 4.5 to 9cm wide, pointed at the tip and, on the lower leaves, heart-shaped at the base; held up to the light it shows countless tiny oil glands. It is grown all over Vietnam, and in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, for the leaf, which is folded around lime, areca nut and bark to make a betel quid. The leaf holds 0.8 to 1.8 per cent, and sometimes 2.4, of an essential oil that smells of creosote or woodsmoke.
