Crown Daisy
Glebionis coronaria
Crown daisy (cải cúc, tần ô) is an annual herb of the daisy family, its smooth upright stem branching freely to half a metre or more. The leaves clasp the stem and are cut pinnately into narrow lobes that broaden and turn toothed towards the tip, and yellow flower heads sit at the ends of the branches. Thought to have come originally from Europe and northern Asia, it is grown throughout Vietnam, and in China and Japan, almost entirely as a leaf vegetable: the plant is cut whole and simmered in canh, the everyday Vietnamese soup. It carries an essential oil with a scent all its own.
