Fish Mint Extract
Houttuynia cordata
Fish mint (Houttuynia cordata) is a small perennial herb of damp ground, spreading by underground rhizomes that root at each node and sending up stems to about 40cm. The leaves are alternate and heart-shaped with a pointed tip; in summer the plant carries tiny pale yellow flowers on a spike set among four white bracts, so that the whole head reads as a single flower. It grows wild in wet places throughout Vietnam, and the whole plant is gathered and used fresh or dried. Crushed, it smells strongly of fish, and it is commonly eaten with fish.
