Hibiscus Leaf
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis
Hibiscus leaf (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) comes from a shrub of one to two metres, its simple, alternate leaves carrying stipules and a saw-toothed edge. The flowers are large, solitary and red, five free petals standing above a green calyx of five joined sepals and a long tube of fused stamens, and the fruit is a capsule. The shrub is planted the length of Vietnam for ornament and for hedging, and it grows in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines too. Leaf and flower are both taken fresh; the leaves contain mucilage, and the flowers contain anthocyanins.
