Indian Mallow
Abutilon indicum
Indian mallow (Abutilon indicum) is a small bushy plant of one to one and a half metres, downy all over, with soft heart-shaped leaves about 10cm across drawn out to a point. The yellow flowers sit singly in the leaf axils on stalks as long as the leaf stalks, and the ring of some twenty carpels that follows looks like a millstone, which is what its Vietnamese name, cối xay, means. It grows wild throughout Vietnam and across tropical Asia. Leaf, stem, root and fruit are all used, fresh or dried, and the leaves are thick with mucilage.
