Jute Leaf
Corchorus olitorius
Jute (Corchorus olitorius) is a herb of one to two metres, its red-brown stem carrying long oval leaves with toothed edges and three to five veins in the lower part of the blade, and small yellow flowers set in threes in the leaf axils. In Vietnam it is grown in many places for the young leaves, which are ready about a month after planting and go into the soup pot. The leaves hold a mucilage that gives the broth its characteristic slippery body. The same plant is a fibre crop, spun for sacking and rope, and is grown for both leaf and fibre across Africa, Asia and the Americas.
