Katuk
Sauropus androgynus
Katuk (Sauropus androgynus) is a smooth-stemmed shrub that will reach a metre and a half to two metres, though constant picking usually keeps it to about a metre. Its bark is green at first, ageing to pale brown, and the short-stalked leaves are ovate to oblong with plain margins, set alternately along many upright branches; small flowers sit in the leaf axils, male below and female above, followed by round capsules. It grows wild and is cultivated all over Vietnam for those leaves, which are gathered fresh and go straight into the pot to be simmered as canh, the everyday household soup.
