Ludwigia
Ludwigia hyssopifolia
Ludwigia (Ludwigia hyssopifolia), rau mương in Vietnamese, is an annual herb of forty to sixty centimetres, freely branched, its stems and branches ridged with four raised angles. The leaves are long and lance-shaped with seven or eight pairs of side veins; small stalkless white flowers sit singly in the leaf axils, followed by smooth cylindrical capsules packed with seed. It likes wet ground, growing along water channels, dyke banks and paddy edges in the Mekong delta. The whole plant and its root are cut in the dry season, washed, chopped and dried, then simmered in water. The taste is mild, and the plant is also cooked in soup.
