Peristrophe bivalvis
Magenta plant (Peristrophe bivalvis) is an erect, much-branched herb growing to about a metre, its four-angled stems swollen just above the nodes and its thin, paired leaves ovate to lanceolate and 7-16 cm long, smooth above and lightly downy beneath, with reddish-violet flowers in terminal clusters. It is distributed from eastern India and Sri Lanka to central China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Java, growing along forest watercourses and, more often, on farmed ground and in thickets as a relic of old planting. Roughly four months after planting the twigs are lopped; fresh or dried, they are chipped, pounded and boiled to draw out a purplish to orange-red colour.
