Malabar Spinach
Basella alba
Malabar spinach (Basella alba) is a twining vine of one and a half to two metres, annual or biennial, with pale green or purple-tinged stems and thick, fleshy, pointed oval leaves. Small white to purplish-pink flowers stand in slender spikes at the leaf joints and ripen into little dark purple berries. Native to the tropics of Asia and Africa, in Vietnam it grows wild and is trained over garden fences for the kitchen, the stems and leaves gathered through summer and autumn and simmered in canh, where their mucilage thickens the broth. The ripe berries are also pressed to stain preserves red.
