Ringworm Bush

Senna alata

Ringworm bush (Senna alata) is a shrub about a metre tall or more, carrying very large pinnate leaves 30 to 40cm long with eight to fourteen pairs of leaflets, and spikes of pale brownish-yellow flowers, themselves 30 to 40cm long, at the leaf joints. Its flat pods, 8 to 16cm long, are winged along both edges and hold as many as sixty seeds. The plant came from South America and is now grown across the tropics; in Vietnam it grows wild and cultivated, most abundantly in the south and centre and, in the north, in Thanh Hoá, Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh.
