Sensitive Plant
Mimosa pudica
The sensitive plant (Mimosa pudica), known in Vietnamese as cây xấu hổ or trinh nữ, is a small sprawling plant with hooked prickles along its stems. Its leaves are twice pinnate, the secondary stalks spreading like a duck's foot and carrying fifteen to twenty pairs of tiny leaflets, and they fold shut at the lightest touch, the habit behind the Vietnamese name. The flower heads are reddish purple and oval. It grows wild along roadsides throughout Vietnam and is not planted. The whole plant is used, or the leaves and roots alone; roots are dug at any time of year, washed, sliced thin and dried.
