Chloranthus spicatus
Chloranthus (Chloranthus spicatus), hoa sói in Vietnamese, is a smooth-stemmed shrub growing to about 1.5 m, its branches swollen at the nodes and set with glossy, opposite leaves whose margins are finely toothed. Native to China, it is cultivated across eastern Asia and in many parts of Vietnam, flowering between May and September. The flowers are tiny and yellow-green, without petals, and are carried in terminal clusters of ten to twenty short spikes. Both flowers and leaves are aromatic, and the flowers carry an essential oil: they are brewed fresh on their own as a tea-like drink, or blended with tea leaves during drying to pass on their scent.
