Cleistocalyx Flower Bud
Cleistocalyx operculatus
Cleistocalyx operculatus is a small tree of the myrtle family, five to six metres tall and sometimes taller, with smooth young branches and tough, broadly oval leaves 8 to 20 cm long that are flecked with brown on both faces. Its flowers are tiny, pale greenish-white and almost stalkless, massed in pyramid-shaped clusters that spread from the scars of fallen leaves. The tree grows wild and is planted in almost every province of Vietnam, and is found across tropical Asia and in China. It is the unopened buds that are picked and dried, then brewed with hot water; crushed, they give off the pleasant scent particular to vối.
