Cogongrass Root
Imperata cylindrica
Cogongrass (Imperata cylindrica) is a perennial grass with a stout, firm rhizome, sending up stems 30 to 90 cm tall and narrow leaves 15 to 30 cm long but only 3 to 6 mm wide, sharp along the edge. Its flower spike is silvery white, 5 to 20 cm long and downy. The grass grows wild throughout Vietnam, where old leaves are cut for thatch and young ones fed to buffalo, cattle and horses. The rhizome is the part taken, dug up and dried in the sun or a drier. It carries glucose, fructose and organic acids, and is simmered in water, sometimes with corn silk and chrysanthemum flowers.
