Cutleaf Groundcherry
Physalis angulata
Cutleaf groundcherry (Physalis angulata) is an annual herb of fifty to ninety centimetres, branching freely from angled stems that often droop. The oval leaves are alternate and sometimes lobed, and single flowers, bright yellow or whitish, sit on slender stalks. As the smooth round berry ripens from green to red, the hairy calyx swells with it into a lantern three to four centimetres long, enclosing the fruit like a bag. Indian in origin and now spread through the tropics, it grows wild on field banks and grassy ground, and in An Giang on Núi Tô. Plants are gathered all year, fresh or dried; the fruit tastes sour.
