Docynia indica
Táo mèo (Docynia indica) is a small tree of the rose family, five to six metres tall and thorny while young, with oval leaves 6 to 10 cm long. White five-petalled flowers open in March, one to three together. The tree grows wild and is also planted above 1,000 metres in Lai Châu, Yên Bái, Sơn La and Lào Cai. Its rounded fruit, 3 to 4 cm across, ripens yellow-green in September and October and tastes sour; ripe fruit is picked, cut across or split lengthways, and dried in the sun or a drier. Vietnamese fruit has measured about 16% sugar and 2.76% tannin, hence its astringent edge.
