Ficus racemosa
The cluster fig (Ficus racemosa) is a tree of fifteen to twenty metres, its alternate leaves lance-shaped to oval and often carrying the small galls left by insects. Its flowers sit inside a hollow fleshy receptacle that closes over them, and these grow in clusters directly on the trunk and the branches, ripening red between June and November: the receptacle is the fig itself. The tree grows wild and is also planted across the lowland provinces of Vietnam, and its leaves, bark and latex are gathered the year round, the bark scraped, sliced thin and dried. The taste is sweet, with a slight astringency.
