Dried Roselle
Hibiscus sabdariffa
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also called red sorrel and known in Vietnam as bụp giấm, is an upright annual herb reaching 0.5-3 m, with smooth purplish stems and broad leaves cut into three to five lobes. Most probably African in origin, it is now found throughout the tropics, a short-day plant that stands up well to drought. Its flowers are 3-5 cm long, pinkish to yellow with a purple centre, and never open fully. What is picked is the calyx behind the flower: once the bloom fades it thickens into a fleshy red cup 2.5-5.5 cm long, longer than the fruit it encloses, and it is used fresh or dried.
