Malva Nut
Scaphium macropodum
Malva nut (Scaphium macropodum, long called Sterculia lychnophora) comes from a forest tree thirty to forty metres tall, with large simple leaves, brown or silvery beneath. It flowers in March and April, before the new leaves, and each flower sets one or two red, lantern-shaped follicles that open in May, leaving the wrinkled reddish-brown seed hanging between two leaf-like wings. The trees grow in southern Vietnam — Biên Hoà, Bà Rịa, Bình Định, Bình Thuận and Phú Yên — and the seeds are gathered in April and May and dried. Steeped in hot water, each seed swells eight- or tenfold into a pale brown, faintly astringent jelly, sweetened with sugar and drunk.
