Prunella Spike
Prunella vulgaris
Prunella spike comes from Prunella vulgaris, a perennial of the mint family whose square, purple-tinged stems carry paired oval leaves and, at each shoot tip, a spike of pale purple two-lipped flowers set in whorls of five or six. That spike is the part gathered, cut in summer once some of the small hard fruits have ripened, then dried in the sun or by gentle heat. Vietnam once imported it from China; it is now cut at Sa Pa, Tam Đảo and Hà Giang, where it stands thick through April, May and June, some of it withering by August. In parts of China it is brewed in place of tea.
