Lotus Leaf Extract
Nelumbo nucifera
Lotus leaf, lá sen or hà diệp, comes from Nelumbo nucifera, a water plant whose cylindrical rhizome runs in pond mud and which sends its leaves clear of the water on long stalks set with small prickles. The blade is shield-shaped and very large, 60 to 70 centimetres across, with veins radiating from the centre, and it stands beside big white or pink flowers. Lotus is grown in many parts of Vietnam, to eat and for herbal use, with the harvest running from July to September. The leaf carries a distinctive set of alkaloids, nuciferine and roemerine among them, along with citric, tartaric and succinic acids.
