Roselle / Hibiscus
Hibiscus sabdariffa
Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa), also called hibiscus, is a fast-growing shrub in the mallow family, native to tropical Africa and now grown across Asia, including Vietnam. After the flowers fade, the sepals swell into a fleshy, deep red calyx, the part that is harvested and dried. Steeped or gently boiled, the dried calyx turns water a deep ruby red, releasing a light, fruity, faintly floral scent and a tart, cranberry-like tang. It is used for hot or iced tea, and for jams and syrups.
