Sophora Flower Bud
Styphnolobium japonicum
Sophora flower buds are the closed blooms of Styphnolobium japonicum, a long-lived tree of the pea family that grows six to ten metres tall. Its leaves are pinnate and alternate, with as many as seventeen leaflets, and its small bright yellow flowers hang in sprays at the ends of the branches, followed by pods holding one to four seeds. The tree is planted in many Vietnamese provinces, above all Thái Bình, Bắc Giang, Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh. The sprays are broken off in summer before the flowers open and dried quickly in sun or gentle heat. The dried buds are yellow-green, faintly scented and slightly bitter.
