Wild Banana Seed
Musa balbisiana
Wild banana (Musa balbisiana) is a tree-like perennial herb 2-9 m tall, growing from a short underground corm that throws up a clump of suckers; what looks like a trunk is a tight bundle of rolled leaf-sheaths, topped by oblong blades up to five metres long. Native to eastern India and now widely distributed across South-East Asia, it grows wild in forest, on forest edges, in ravines and beside water in the humid lowlands and up to about 1200 m, and is occasionally raised in home gardens. Unlike cultivated bananas, its curved, long-stalked berries are packed with almost spherical seeds.
