Abelmoschus Root

Abelmoschus sagittifolius

Abelmoschus root is the tuberous root of sâm bố chính (Abelmoschus sagittifolius), a hairy herbaceous plant of the mallow family that grows wild in Vietnam and is now widely cultivated there. The stems are soft, upright or half-trailing; the leaves range from heart-shaped to narrow and spear-like, sometimes cut into five lobes, and the flowers may be red or yellow. Plants are raised from seed or from the tubers themselves, and both wild and cultivated forms are found in Phú Yên, Bình Thuận and Bình Phước and around Ho Chi Minh City. The plant is also known by the older botanical name Hibiscus sagittifolius.
