Aralia armata
Aralia (Aralia armata) is a small, many-branched shrub whose slim, hairless stems are set with prickles curving downwards; even the veins of its large, twice- or thrice-pinnate leaves carry small spines. Its many little flowers, whitish- to greenish-yellow, are held in prickly branched umbels, and the fruit is a dull black berry three or four millimetres long. It grows wild in the mountain provinces of northern and north-central Vietnam, among them Hoà Bình, Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn, Tuyên Quang, Hà Giang, Thanh Hoá and Nghệ An. The root is dug, washed free of grit and dried, with no further preparation.
