Atractylodes lancea
Atractylodes lancea is a perennial about 60 centimetres tall with an upright stem and a swollen tuberous root. Its nearly stalkless leaves are three-lobed low on the plant, the middle lobe much the largest, and lance-shaped and undivided higher up, all finely toothed; the flower heads are narrower than those of Atractylodes macrocephala, with white to pale purple florets. Vietnam has long imported it from China, where it grows in Jiangsu, Hubei and Henan, and grows too little of its own to be self-sufficient. The root is lifted in spring or autumn, washed, trimmed and dried, its skin left on so the yellow oil sacs beneath keep their essential oil.
