Callisia fragrans
Basket plant (Callisia fragrans) is a perennial herb of Mexican origin, grown in tropical America, Europe and Australia. It carries an upright stem of 15-20 cm alongside runners that creep over the ground or turn upward when given support, and its large, glossy, oblong-lanceolate leaves reach 20-30 cm, sheathing the stem at the base, wavy at the margin and stiff enough to snap. It reached Vietnam in 2006, planted first in Thanh Hoa and now common in gardens, pots and hanging baskets in many places. The leaves are eaten raw; the runners are cut short and steeped in spirit. The taste is faintly sour.
