Bitter Vine Extract
Tinospora crispa
Bitter vine (Tinospora crispa) is a vigorous climber with a strikingly warty, pale brown stem that runs six or seven metres and more, carrying alternate heart-shaped leaves 8-12cm long and, at the leaf axils, short sprays of flowers that ripen into small red fruits. It grows wild in the northern provinces of Vietnam, among them Hòa Bình, Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang and Phú Thọ, and in Laos, Cambodia and the Philippines, and it strikes readily from stem cuttings; in the hot months a shoot can lengthen 20cm in a day. The stem is the part used, cut into short pieces and dried. Fresh, it is slimy and intensely bitter.
