Blackberry Lily
Iris domestica
Blackberry lily (Iris domestica, once Belamcanda sinensis) is a perennial with a creeping rhizome and upright leafy stems reaching a metre, its sword-shaped leaves 20 to 40cm long. The flowers sit on slender, soft stalks, opening six yellow-orange to red tepals flecked with purple, followed by an oval capsule that splits in three to shed round, glossy blue-black seeds. It grows wild throughout Vietnam, most abundantly on savannah ground, and is sometimes planted as an ornamental; it also grows in China, Japan and the Philippines. The rhizome is dug in spring or autumn, washed, trimmed of fine roots and dried, then softened in rice water, sliced thin and dried again.
