Breynia fruticosa
Breynia (Breynia fruticosa) is a small, smooth-stemmed shrub of the spurge family whose leaves vary in shape and size, 3-6cm long on very short dark stalks. The underside often carries a black line left by a crawling grub, the mark behind its Vietnamese name bồ cu vẽ. Clusters of tiny male and female flowers sit in the leaf axils, followed by flattened round capsules about 5mm across. It grows wild throughout northern and central Vietnam, apparently not in the south, and on into Laos, Cambodia, China, Malaysia and the Philippines. The fresh leaf is the part gathered, and it can be picked in any month.
