Medicinal Herbs
Chinese Motherwort Extract
Leonurus japonicus
Chinese motherwort (Leonurus japonicus) is an upright herb of the mint family, living a year or two and reaching 0.6 to 1 metre, its square stem covered in short fine hairs. The leaves change shape up the plant: heart-shaped and coarsely toothed at the base, deeply cut into three lobes on the stem, almost undivided and stalkless at the top. Pink to purple-pink two-lipped flowers ring the stem in whorls. It grows wild in Vietnam along streams and riverbanks on sandy soil and in fallow fields, and some growers now cultivate it. The above-ground parts are cut between May and September, once about half the flowers have opened, then dried.
