Climbing Fern
Lygodium japonicum
Climbing fern (Lygodium japonicum), bòng bong in Vietnamese, is a fern that climbs: from a creeping rhizome it sends up very long fronds that scramble over scrub and hedges, and it is common in thickets and along hedges and fences. Each frond carries many pairs of pinnae, and every pinna is divided again into small leaflets fringed along their edges with spore cases; the spores are four-sided and greyish-white with a yellow cast. The whole plant is cut nearly all year round, dried in the sun without further processing, and simmered in water.
