Codonopsis pilosula
Đảng sâm (Codonopsis pilosula) is a perennial whose twining, much-branched stems carry heart-shaped leaves, pale green above and white below, and solitary bell-shaped flowers of pale yellow. It is dug for its root: long, cylindrical, up to about 1.7 centimetres across, pale yellow and finely wrinkled. Until 1960 the đảng sâm on sale in Vietnam was imported from China and Korea; from 1961 it has been gathered in Cao Bằng, Lạng Sơn and Lào Cai, and cultivation on shaded ground, with a trellis for the vine, is recent. Lifted roots are washed, half-dried, rolled soft by hand three or four times, then dried out.
