Drynaria
Drynaria fortunei
Cốt toái bổ (Drynaria fortunei) is a perennial fern that settles in rock crevices, over cushions of moss and on the trunks of big trees such as banyan and fig; Vietnamese also calls it tắc kè đá, rock gecko. Its thick, fleshy rhizome is covered in glossy golden scales, and it carries two kinds of frond: short brown sterile ones, heart-shaped at the base, and green fertile fronds twenty-five to forty centimetres long, cut into lobes. It grows wild on rocks and trees through Vietnam's forested uplands, and in Laos and China. The rhizome is gathered year-round, singed clear of its hairs and dried, sometimes steamed first.
