Ophiopogon japonicus
Mạch môn (Ophiopogon japonicus) is a low, tufted perennial of ten to forty centimetres, its narrow leaves rising straight from the base, fifteen to forty centimetres long and only a few millimetres wide. They resemble barley leaves and stay green through the winter, which is what the Vietnamese name records. Pale bluish flowers sit on a short stalk, followed by dark purple berries. The plant grows wild and is cultivated in Vietnam, most of all at Phùng, Nghĩa Trai and Ninh Hiệp. Swollen root tubers are lifted in June and July from two- and three-year-old plants, cored and dried; spindle-shaped and pale yellow, they smell distinctive and taste sweet.
