Excoecaria cochinchinensis
Đơn lá đỏ (Excoecaria cochinchinensis) is a small shrub of seventy centimetres to a metre and a half, its slender branchlets purple. The leaves grow in opposite pairs, dark green above and purple-red beneath, oblong and drawn to a short point, six to twelve centimetres long with toothed edges. Small flowers stand in spikes at the leaf axils and shoot tips from April to June, the male spikes about two centimetres. It grows wild and is widely planted in gardens, the wild plants running taller with less colour underneath. The leaves and young shoots are picked all year, toasted until golden and simmered in water.
