Gardenia jasminoides
Gardenia (Gardenia jasminoides) is a small evergreen shrub of one to two metres, with a smooth upright stem, glossy dark leaves in opposite pairs and solitary white flowers, stalkless and strongly scented, that open in summer. The fruit that follows is shaped like an old wine cup, ridged with six to nine angles and packed with seeds, ripening a yellowish red. It grows wild beside mountain streams in northern Vietnam and is planted in the lowlands. Ripe fruit is picked between August and November, stalked and dried, then kept dry, since it takes up moisture readily. It smells fragrant and tastes bitter, and its yellow colours cakes and jellies.
