Gnetum Extract

Gnetum montanum

Gnetum (Gnetum montanum) is a woody climber that runs ten or twelve metres up forest trees on a stem thick with knotted joints. Its paired leaves are oval and can reach 30cm long by 12cm across; male and female cones grow on separate plants, the males in branched clusters at the joints; the glossy fruit, about 2cm long, carries a waxy bloom. It grows wild in forested hill country all over Vietnam, from cold Sapa to hot Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang and Hà Tây. The fruit is eaten and the stem twisted into rope for boats and rafts, or simmered in water and steeped in rice spirit.
