Gymnema sylvestre
Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) is a woody climbing vine reaching about 8 m, with leaves that are obovate to ovate or oblong-elliptical, 3-9 cm long on short stalks, greenish-white to cream flowers, and a smooth, tapering seed pod 4.5-9 cm long. It grows in open forest and scrub, and is recorded from Africa, India and Sri Lanka through Vietnam and southern China to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan; reports from Malaysia and Indonesia remain unconfirmed. The leaves are the part gathered in India, while in China the whole plant, and especially the roots, is used.
