Indian Heliotrope
Heliotropium indicum
Indian heliotrope (Heliotropium indicum) is an annual herb of 25 to 40 cm, with a stout branching stem and oval leaves, both bristling with coarse hairs and wavy or unevenly toothed at the edge. Small pale-violet or white flowers sit in two even rows along a curved scorpioid spike 8 to 11 cm long, borne at the shoot tips or in the leaf axils. Probably native to tropical America and now a weed across the tropics, it grows wild throughout Vietnam on waste ground, fallow fields, roadsides and abandoned gardens. The whole plant, roots included, is pulled mainly in summer and autumn, then used fresh or dried.
