Leea rubra
Leea (Leea rubra) is a shrub that grows in dense clumps to a metre or a metre and a half, its stems grooved lengthways and swollen at each node like the knee joint of a crane — the likeness behind its Vietnamese name, gối hạc. Below ground are tuberous roots of pink, white and yellow. Leaves are three times pinnate with coarsely toothed, almost stalkless leaflets, and small pink flowers stand in flat heads at the branch tips from May to October, ripening to black berries. It grows wild in Vietnam's hill and mountain country. The roots are dug in autumn and winter, washed, sliced thin and dried.
