Mulberry Root Bark
Morus alba
Mulberry root bark, tang bạch bì, is the bark of the root of the white mulberry, Morus alba — a tree that can reach fifteen metres, though constant picking of the leaves for silkworms keeps most to two or three. Its alternate leaves are oval or three-lobed with coarse teeth and three veins fanning out from the stalk; the small unisexual flowers give way to a clustered fruit that ripens red, then almost black. The species came from China and was brought into Vietnam long ago, and is now planted everywhere for silk. The root bark carries flavones, tannin, pectin and only a trace of volatile oil.
