Wolfiporia extensa
Phục linh (Wolfiporia extensa) is not a plant but a fungus, growing underground on the roots of pine. It forms a solid block, sometimes as small as a fist and sometimes weighing five kilograms, grey-black and wrinkled outside, occasionally lumpy; cut across, the flesh is uneven and either white or pinkish-grey, and ground down it gives a greyish-white powder of fine hyphae and spores. When the block has grown around a pine root, so that the root runs through its middle, it goes by a separate name, phục thần. Vietnam imports it from China, the best from Yunnan; it was found near Đà Lạt in 1977.
