Ramie Root
Boehmeria nivea
Ramie root comes from Boehmeria nivea, a perennial growing to one and a half or two metres, with large alternate heart-shaped leaves 7-15cm long, toothed at the edge, dark green and rough above and white beneath under a dense felt of pale hairs, three veins running out from the stalk. It is grown throughout Vietnam for its bast fibre, which is spun into fishing nets, and for its leaves, which go into the sticky rice cake bánh gai. The root is dug in any season, best in autumn and winter, washed, sliced or left whole, dried in the sun or a dryer, then simmered in water.
