Red Clerodendrum
Clerodendrum japonicum
Red clerodendrum (Clerodendrum japonicum) is a shrub of about two metres, with grooved four-angled stems and broad heart-shaped leaves up to 30 cm across, finely toothed and carried on long stalks. From May to November tall panicles of scarlet or pink flowers stand at the tips of the shoots, followed by hard blue-black drupes. It grows on damp, half-shaded ground in open forest, valleys, forest margins and along tracks up to 1,000 m, across northern and central Vietnam from Sơn La and Hà Giang down to Quảng Nam. The roots are dug at any time of year, then washed, sliced thin and dried.
