Rehmannia
Rehmannia glutinosa
Rehmannia (Rehmannia glutinosa) is a low herb, 10-30cm tall, covered all over in soft grey-white hairs, its obovate toothed leaves in a rosette at the base and its purple-red bell-shaped flowers borne in summer. Its rhizome swells into a tuber, at first upright then spreading sideways, 0.4 to 3cm thick, yellow-red inside like a turmeric-fleshed yam. Once imported wholly from China and Korea, the plant has been grown in Vietnam since 1958 and now does well in almost any province. Tubers are lifted six and a half months after planting, washed, then dried in a kiln or in the sun.
